Exploring Shanghai: A Traveler’s Guide to China’s Vibrant City

ashleymhandley

Shanghai, China, is an extraordinary destination that combines rich history, modern innovations, and unforgettable cultural experiences. Before embarking on your journey, a little preparation can go a long way. For instance, unlike in many Western countries, most merchants in China don’t accept Apple Pay, debit, or credit cards. Instead, the primary payment methods are apps like DIDI Rider (Uber alternative) and Alipay. Downloading these ahead of time will make your trip much smoother. Another tip for staying connected is to use the Airalo app to purchase an affordable eSIM for reliable cellular service during your trip. And don’t forget to pack a universal charger—an essential item for international travel!

The Best Time to Visit

If you’re planning your trip, aim for October or November. During these months, the weather is perfect—comfortable temperatures without the summer crowds. Whether you’re walking along the riverfront or exploring historic sites, you’ll appreciate the pleasant atmosphere.

Getting Around Shanghai

Shanghai’s metro system is one of the best in the world—fast, clean, and incredibly efficient. It’s the easiest and most affordable way to navigate the sprawling city. From bustling shopping streets to tranquil gardens, you’ll never be too far from your next adventure.

Must-Visit Attractions

During my time in Shanghai, a few spots stood out:

  1. The Bund: Strolling along the Bund offers stunning views of Shanghai’s modern skyline on one side and its historic colonial architecture on the other. It’s a peaceful place to reflect and watch boats glide along the river.

  2. Yu Garden: Yu Garden is a peaceful Chinese garden, perfect for escaping the busy city. It has beautiful buildings, rocks, and ponds, making it a great place for photography.

  3. Shanghai Zoo: The highlight of my visit to the zoo was seeing pandas up close! Pandas, my spirit animal, embody curiosity, adventure, and peace. The zoo also has fascinating creatures like red pandas—an animal I didn’t even know existed until this trip!

A Food Lover’s Paradise

Shanghai is a haven for food enthusiasts. One of my favorite culinary experiences was enjoying dumplings, a local specialty. Dining in Shanghai often involves sharing food—a group orders various dishes, which are placed on a spinning table for everyone to sample. This tradition fosters connection and adds a unique charm to the meal.

Unique Cultural Encounters

As an African American woman in Shanghai, I had several memorable interactions. Many locals, especially parents, were eager for their children to practice speaking English with me. While children in China are excellent at reading English, they rarely get the opportunity to converse with native speakers. I was also flattered by the many compliments on my beauty, which led to requests for photos. These moments highlighted the warmth and curiosity of the local people. Shanghai is a city of contrasts—where ancient traditions blend with modern innovations. Whether you’re marveling at the city’s skyline, savoring local dishes, or connecting with its people, Shanghai offers experiences you’ll treasure forever.
